Coverage of Women’s Sport on the Increase
Victoria’s Office of Women in Sport and Recreation have released their findings for 2023-24
The Office of Women in Sport and Recreation in Victoria have released the research from their ‘The Conversation of Sport’ report, which details the coverage of women’s sport.
Here are some of the key findings from the report. It found that while significant underrepresentation continued, there were positive trends to be acknowledged during a year that included the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
20% of sports news coverage focused on women’s sport in 2023-24 (up from 15%)
coverage of women’s sport increased across all media types – print, online, tv news and radio news
14 of the top 20 sports had increased representation of women’s sport coverage in 2023-24.
there was stronger recognition of the achievements, talent and hard work of our leading women’s teams and athletes
only one women’s team – the Matildas – made the top 10 teams by coverage (3rd overall)
34% of bylines were by woman journalists or presenters in 2023-24 (up from 27%)
there was a 62% increase in the volume of stories on women’s sport contributed by men journalists or presenters
outside of athletes themselves, men were 15 times more likely to be a source for women's sport, than women for men's sport – driven by the ongoing dominance of men in high performance coaching and CEO roles
