Coach Liz Mills

‘Creating your own opportunities is the key to success.‘

Trailblazer. Risk taker. Pioneer.

Coach Liz Mills grew playing basketball alongside her twin sister in Sydney. By her teen years she was coaching, and then a trip to Africa saw her take a chance which would ultimately lead to her becoming the first woman to be named Head Coach of a senior men’s national basketball team for a major tournament, when she led Kenya to a historic appearance at the Basketball Africa League.

We chat about her story of fighting to create opportunities for herself, the ongoing battle women coaches face in most regions of the world, and why girls and women shouldn’t be afraid of the word ‘no’ when it comes to applying for roles.

This chat was recorded in July 2023 but was never initially released due to poor audio. While it’s still not perfect, it’s been cleaned up and is better for listening, and HER WAY believed it was worth getting out of the archives - Liz’s advice and journey is as relevant as ever.
