For over 100 years, Ikon Park (or Princes Park as it’s known by traditionalists) has been the spiritual home of Australian Rules club Carlton.
The team, known for their iconic logo on a plain navy guernsey, has been one of the sport’s most well known and passionately supported clubs for over a century. After the men’s team called Ikon Park their own for 932 matches, last weekend it was the AFLW team who had the honour of running out for the club’s 1000th game at the iconic venue.
Carlton’s AFLW team had the honour of hosting the first ever game of the elite women’s competition in 2017, where the story of the full house sign going up and forcing fans to try and climb walls to get in, are already legendary.
A member of that capacity crowd seven years ago was teenager Lulu Beatty, who is now a member of the Carlton AFLW squad, and had her first chance to play at that same oval just a few weeks ago in the side’s win over Geelong.
In this video, HER WAY visits Ikon Park on the night of the 1000th game, and chats to Lulu about that inaugural game, the honour of playing at what many consider the home ground of AFLW, and the feeling of playing for a club with such history in both men’s and now women’s Australian football.
