Australia’s Bilbies, the national blind football team for women, have claimed a medal in their first ever international tournament today in Japan.
The Bilbies recorded 0-0 draws in two of their pool games at the IBSA Grand Prix, enough to make it to a third place playoff with England.
The Aussies scored the game’s only goal in today’s bronze medal playoff to run out 1-0 winners, leading to scenes of emotion as players made their way to the bench to celebrate with coaching staff.
Australia has been led by captain Ingrid McKenna, while A-League and one time AFLW-listed athlete Casey Dumont was goalkeeeper and vice captain.
The tournament has been seen as key to helping raise the sport’s chances as an event for future Paralympic Games.
